What is it?

  • Many people do crosswords and puzzles just for fun and to occupy the odd bit of time, especially when waiting or travelling.

  • But for others, this is a serious activity, which can even involve competitions.  Here there is some overlap with playing cards and other indoor games.

  • There is a very wide range of puzzle types that you can do, ranging from the traditional newspaper based crosswords and other word games, to mathematical and picture based puzzles.

What you need

Skills and people
  • Anyone can do crosswords and puzzles, whatever their age or sex, and the level of skill required can vary greatly.

  • You can easily do crosswords and puzzles at home on your own, or when you are on your own travelling or waiting for things to happen.

  • But some people enjoy the stimulus and social contact of belonging to a group of puzzle enthusiasts. This can be a local group, or one linked by mail or Internet contacts.

Equipment or clothing
  • The essential requirement is the crossword or other puzzle to complete.  These are often available in ordinary newspapers and magazines.

  • There are also many specially published books of puzzles.  Or, you can make up your own puzzles.

A place or facilities
  • No special facilities are needed.  Groups are usually very informal and meet either at members homes or in a local hall or room.
