What is it?

  • The art of fighting with swords is long established and this had been developed into the modern sport of fencing, which uses blunt edged swords.

  • There are different types of fencing depending on the weight and type of the weapon used;  the main options are foil, epee or sabre.

  • Personal safety while fighting is crucial and people wear special masks and body protection.

  • Many people do the sport for exercise and social contacts, though there are also competitions of at different levels.

Equipment or clothing
  • Special protective clothing and footwear are needed as well as the weapons themselves.

  • For the beginner, most of these can usually be provided by the club or group

A place or facilities
  • The basic requirement is for a gallery of a certain length, width and height in which to fight.

  • There are facilities for fencing in many sports centres and some schools.
