What is it?

  • Many people spend time maintaining, tuning and servicing their cars or motorcycles.  This can be both interesting and money saving, providing you know how to do the maintenance properly.

  • It is important that you learn how to do the job properly, otherwise do-it-yourself car maintenance can be dangerous, both to yourself and others.

  • For some people, the repair and maintenance of older or antique vehicles is a particular hobby.  It may be linked to a more general interest in collecting and driving such vehicles (see also other collecting).

Getting started

  • Find a local car or cycle maintenance group or club (see organisations above).

  • Take a class or course at your local adult education centre.

  • Consult books or magazines on maintaining different types of vehicle.

  • Check in your local library/paper or education centre for more information.

What you need

Skills and people
  • People of most ages and both sexes can do car maintenance, though it is most commonly done by men.  There is a fair amount of physical effort, skill and special knowledge involved.

  • Most people, who do their own car or cycle maintenance and servicing, do this at home.  Some may have access to a local garage.

  • This can be a sociable activity, with family and neighbours helping each other.  There are also groups based on local clubs, classes and tuition.

Equipment or clothing
  • Tools appropriate to the vehicle concerned, plus a manual, are the essentials.

  • Lifting gear and/or a pit giving access to the underside may also be needed.

  • This is generally a rather dirty activity and protective clothing and special cleaning liquids may be needed.

A place or facilities
  • Many people do their maintenance  in their garage or drive way.  It is generally an offence to do car maintenance on the public road.

  • Classes usually get access to a professionally equipped garage.
