What is it?

  • The opportunities for camping and caravanning range from walking and backpacking with a small one or two person tent, to travelling around with a large and luxurious towing or motor caravan which is a true "home from home".

  • Apart from providing a relatively cheap form of holiday, these activities have the attraction of allowing one to stay at a variety of locations in the countryside and elsewhere, with easy access to local facilities and pursuits.

  • Camping and caravanning at all levels is also generally a very social activity with a chance (if you want) to meet new people at each campsite.

Getting started

  • Consult books or magazines on different types of camping.

  • Find a local camping group or club (see organisations above).

  • See if your local group has introductory evenings and other special events.

  • Check in your local library/paper for more information.

What you need

Skills and people
  • Camping is something that anyone can do, whatever their age.

  • You can camp entirely on your own, but you generally need to have permission to put your tent or caravan on someone's property.

  • Many people stay at more formal campsites (see below).

Equipment or clothing
  • In the British climate, you generally need to have at least a tent to provide overnight protection.

  • The quality (and costs) of tents or caravans can range very widely, from the basic to the very luxurious.

  • Cooking  and washing facilities may be needed, though some of them will usually be available at formal sites.

A place or facilities
  • There are permanent campsites widely throughout the UK and many other countries in towns as well as the countryside.

  • Temporary campsites are also available, in connection with special events like pop concerts, or organised by groups for their members.  More details of the latter are available from the organisations listed above.

  • The nature of the washing, cooking, shopping etc facilities available at sites varies greatly.  Some sites specialise in particular types of campers or caravans (eg tents or caravans only).
